paying it forward - a fall service bucket list download

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
— 1 Peter 4:10

I have a confession to make, I avoid watching the news and keeping up with events going on in our country and around the world. As a nearly 50 year old wife and mother to 6 children, I feel like I should pay more attention to the world, but the truth is, it’s just too painful. I don’t think I am alone in admitting that watching even minutes of the news or reading a handful of headlines leaves me feeling completely convinced that the world has turned a dangerous corner that we will never come back from. It’s sad and it’s depressing. So, I choose to remain uninformed, trusting that if some truly significant national or world event occurs, I will learn about it through my husband or friends (but most likely from a Facebook meme). We live in an angry and divisive world. A world where acts of kindness are never front page news because kindness and joy don’t sell. We live in a world that is hurting, where we turn on each other in anger and resentment and have lost touch with the very thing that should tether us, our humaneness. We are all trying each day to live in this crazy world the best way we know how and if we could somehow come back to this truth, come back to this place where when we look at each other we don’t see a potential adversary or a political party but another person, another child of God. And remember that we do not have to agree with one another to choose to be kind.

As I think about how depressing the news can be, I do believe on a local level there are many people doing many things that are kind, that are helping others and changing lives. And maybe if we all make the choice, during this season of gratitude, to focus our energy on how we can make a difference, no matter how big or small the difference is, I think we all should. So on that note, I would like to share our family service bucket list for this fall and I invite you to download your own copy. When you check off some of your items, I hope you will check back in here and share with us!
